According to the stories of the elderly in the local village, the name “Prenn” originates from the K’ho language. The waterfall was previously named “Prenh” (meaning bitter melon), but gradually people mispronounced it as “Prenn.” The name “bitter melon” might be due to the presence of many bitter melon trees around the upper reaches of the waterfall – a type of wild bitter melon that grows naturally with green skin and turns yellow when ripe. The local ethnic groups used to process this fruit for its distinct bitter-sweet flavor.

However, there’s also a legend that the name “Prenn” comes from the Cham language. From the 15th to the 17th century, the area around Prenn Waterfall was a battlefield between the invading Cham people from Ninh Thuan – Binh Thuan regions and the K’ho people protecting their territory. The name “Prenn” means “invaded area” in Cham, referring to the invading forces that came to the native ethnic groups like Chi, Sré, Lat.
