History of Titop Island in Halong Bay

In the past, Titop Island in Quang Ninh was known as Nghia Dia Island or Hong Thap Tu Island. The name was associated with an event in 1905 when a French cargo ship, lacking pepper (ti to in Vietnamese), collided with an underwater rock near Con Coc fishing ground.

The bodies of the sailors were buried on this island, and to commemorate them, the locals named the island “Titop.” In French colonial maps of Halong Bay, Titop was referred to as Cat Nang.

 

On November 22, 1962, President Ho Chi Minh and Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov visited the island. To mark this significant event, President Ho Chi Minh named the island “Titop.”

How to Reach Titop Island in Quang Ninh

Currently, there are several ways to visit Titop Island in Quang Ninh. The three most popular and straightforward methods are renting a boat, taking a cruise tour, or a seaplane excursion.

Renting a Boat to Titop Island

Visiting Titop Island is one of the stops on the second route of Halong Bay sightseeing tours. To reach Titop, you only need to purchase a boat ticket as part of your Halong Bay tour package. The ticket includes the boat trip to the island and other attractions around the bay.

Boat tickets vary from 500,000 to 700,000 VND per hour per boat. For individual travelers, ticket prices range from 150,000 to 250,000 VND per person (excluding entrance fees and meals). In addition to Titop Island, tourists can also visit other famous places like Dog Stone Island, Dinh Huong Islet, Trong Mai Islet, Sung Sot Cave, and Luon Cave.

Taking a Cruise Tour to Titop Island

On overnight cruises in Halong Bay, visiting Titop Island is also part of the itinerary. However, the cost for this type of travel can be relatively high, ranging from several million to tens of million VND depending on the cruise and duration.
